Can all three procedures be done laparoscopically?

Yes, all of the weight-loss procedures performed at Colorado Bariatric Surgery are done laparoscopically, using minimally invasive techniques. This means that the surgeon will make a few very small incisions in the abdominal area to perform the surgery rather than one big long incision (as used in traditional or open surgery). This helps in the reduction of pain after surgery, decreased recovery time, and decreased risk of hernias.

If I have health problems in addition to being obese am I a candidate for surgery?

In most cases, the primary reason for weight-loss surgery is to help with other health problems. Type II Diabetes, Hypertension (high blood pressure), sleep apnea, high cholesterol, joint pain, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (indigestion) among other illnesses show great improvement with surgery and its subsequent weight loss.

Is the weight loss after surgery permanent?

As with all weight loss programs there is never a guarantee that the weight loss is permanent. Surgery has proven to help people keep more weight off easier than other traditional weight-loss methods; however, a commitment to the diet and exercise is essential in continued success.

At which hospital is surgery performed?

Colorado Bariatric Surgery is affiliated with Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colorado, a “Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence” and a 368-bed Level I Trauma Center. The Swedish Medical Center Bariatric Surgery Center includes a dedicated bariatric surgery unit with specialized equipment as well as an expert team. The team, comprised of experienced doctors, registered nurses, specially trained dietitians and care associates, meets regularly to discuss planning, outcomes and improvement options for bariatric surgery patients.

Will I have to take any supplements after surgery?

At Colorado Bariatric Surgery, we do not measure the success of our treatment programs by the amount of weight our patients lose, but in the improvement of the quality of their lives. The surgery itself is only one component of a successful treatment plan; while it will certainly help you lose weight, you must continue to work hard through exercise and diet to obtain the maximum, lifelong benefits of the surgery.
